- At the foot of the Great Pyramids of Giza, the story of one of the
greatest feats in the history of health care in modern Egypt would
unfold over a period spanning over 3 decades. The story is one of faith-in-action of
the highest order that deserves to be remembered by our children and
emulated by women and men everywhere.

- The Association of the Friends of Children with Rheumatic Heart Disease
founded in 1957, grew out of a modest 28 bed bungalow to a multi-storied
complex that within less than 2
decades would see some of the greatest accomplishments in fighting
disease, ignorance and poverty… Thanks to the tireless, selfless,
persistent and dedicated vision, will, skill, courage and compassion of
one woman whose spirit outdaunted a fragile and waning physique- that we
are left with an enduring legacy to mine.

founded in the 70s represented a new concept in education. It was

the professional and cultured middle classes in Egypt, and it marked new
directions and constituencies in the Association’s public services. Above is a view of the Schools in the
Mohandisseen district of Cairo.

- The answer was to set the new generation on a sound footing whereby they

- New projects never ceased to be planned and implemented… Up to the very
end… Zahira continued to lay foundations for health, educational, social
welfare and charity institutions… like the above complex of homes for
orphans and widows, for a school,
and for student hostels in the suburban Sixth October City.
